Mortal Engines

Social Campaign

‘Ambitious’ is the only way to describe our approach to Peter Jackson’s Mortal Engines social campaign. I led our agency’s creative team on this account as the senior designer. We were tasked with creating a range of unique, platform-specific social endeavors.

We jumped into action when 3D Photos became available on Facebook, creating ticketing graphics that users could look around as the custom depth map added a fun 3D effect once uploaded to the platform.

Our biggest challenge came in the form of the Mortal Engines Instagram Mural: an eighteen-panel behemoth that mimicked the stacked tiers of the London Traction City. The panels flow over the edges of their respective panels to form a cohesive blueprint of the ship when viewed in full. I designed the whole beast six panels at a time.

Finally, to supplement more traditional texted videos and a microsite, we created interactive Instagram Stories that polled users on their strengths and weaknesses. The full story had an excellent 79% retention rate.

Still, to this day, I think about that giant Instagram grid, and what I feel is relief – relief those have mostly gone out of style.
